We will touch base as a group and explore the possibilities in learning drawing, painting, sculpting, printing, digital, theatre set design, photography, architecture, yearbook/newspaper design, fashion & textile design, poetry and creative writing.
As a group, we will explore music through lessons in vocal, instrumental, lyric writing and basic concepts of sound mixing. These can be explored deeper if interest by the group is there for the school year.
We will do segments on the following athletic activities to introduce students to possible interests: dance, baseball/softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cheer/poms, football, gymnastics/acro, running.
In a group, we will touch on these subjects as well as bring in experts in these areas that work in the industry or teach in the industry based off student interest: computer sciences, coding, robotics, typing, engineering, makers/tinkers/inventors.
We feel strongly about fostering our students to work together over all ages and learn how to work as a whole towards common goods for the student group. To do this we will incorporate leadership/community rolls, peer mentoring/service learning, community problem solving/planning, and incorporate public speaking/debate into these activities.
Our world is much bigger than where we live and we feel it's important to know a language and cultures outside of ones own. We will offer training in ASL (sign language) & Spanish and segments on cultural studies and global awareness on these and other cultures around the world.
We also feel it is very important for students to touch on skills that they may need as they transition into adulthood. Things that are not only needed to maintain homes, themselves and their finances, but things that may become a loved hobby for them when they are older: Nature Studies, Gardening/Sustainability, Cooking/Nutrition, Woodworking, Finance/Domestic Organization.
We find it very important to have a skill set to allow one to be able to have calm in a turbulent times of life. Our students will gain self awareness and understanding for others through Yoga, Psych/Sociology, Pilates, and mindfulness through observing, describing, & participating in methods: such as observing, wordless watching, noticing thoughts & feelings, using words to capture your experience, fully engaging in the present moment, letting go of self-consciousness, mindful breathing, and more.
Our program is set up as community based learning through teaching different age groups all together. From Meghan's experience, homeschooling between her three different age levels, she has found that most subjects are not necessarily age specific. Most concepts and learning experiences can be had by any age level. And learning some of these advanced learning concepts at a younger age only builds a more confident and mature child.
We also strive to teach our students to work with others which includes working with different aged peers. This builds a sense of community as well as patience and understanding. They learn to problem solve on levels above and below their age level which allows them to see the bigger picture outside of themselves. We also find that pairing up an older student with a younger student for certain activities, allows for a younger student to see how to be and think above their age level, as well as allows an older student to teach by showing and they tend to grasp a concept better because they are listening, learning, and doing to show their younger peer. This makes a hands on learning opportunity that will cement full concepts in their minds quicker. And this type of learning environment also builds a sense of team across all the students.
